About

Anke Buchmann is works as an independent artist, ceramist and educator in Berlin.

As a visual artist her practice combines ceramics, performance and sculptural research to create multi-layered experiences rooted in the themes of identity, memory, freedom, and the body.

Her research is concerned with the question of how to access and document lived experiences in clay. She sees her sculptures as archives of body memories, embodied experiences, and performative actions. Her work is informed by her journey as a forced right-hander, including her reflections on the resulting disconnection between body and mind. By combining her unique experiences with a deep commitment to process, her work invites the audience to engage with and reflect upon the power of embodied memory and experience. She creates a dialogue between her body and the material. synchronising her breath with slowed down gestures she then lets her body decide about duration and type of action to transform the clay.

Born in Rostock, former GDR, in 1978 Anke grew up as a forced righthander, an experience that informs her work till today. From early on – at the age of six – she discovered her passion for clay – a material that allowed her to experience and express herself, engaging both hands at free will. For 10 years she stayed with it and returned to clay in 2014, where she became a student of east german potter Joachim Jung. In 2015 she started studying at Central Saint Martins, University of Art London, focusing on ceramics, sculpture and performance.

In Summer 2018 Anke received a first class honours degree in Ceramics from Central Saint Martins. During her studies she has been nominated twice one of the best emerging creatives from the University of the Arts, London. She was the Winner of the NextGen Design Award in 2016 and won the Good Design Awards 2017. By Tate Modern Director Frances Morris Anke was selected and consulted as one of the most talented artists from UAL in 2018.

She exhibited in solo and group shows in Berlin, London and France as part of the British Ceramic Biennial, Pangolin London, Ceramic Art London, London Design Festival, Central Saint Martins, Lethaby Gallery, Art Bermondsey Project Space,  Sugarhouse Studios, The Hub at Wellcome Collection London and Domaine de Boisbuchet, France. Anke is also a Fellow of Domaine de Boisbuchet.

In 2018 Anke has been selected by VanityFair for the A-List of incoming talents and highlighted by Refinery29 as artist to watch, listed amongst “5 Young Female Artists That Are Going To Be Big”.

In 2020 Anke founded HANDFUL, a brand rooted in her artistic research under which she offers creative education and workshop facilitation for local educational institutions, companies and the local community. Her embodied practise let her to develop a method, that she calls Clay Meditation with which she inspires participants to create a body-mind-connection through clay.
